The Fogo Island Folk Alliance was formed in 1982 with the intention of fostering
an interest in Newfoundland Music, Song and Dance.

A small group of local artists gathered weekly in a hall where they would
entertain each other for a couple of hours.

As interest grew, more locals joined the gatherings and they travelled around
Fogo Island performing and gathering new members, until in 1984 The Fogo Island
Folk Alliance sponsored the first Brimstone Head Folk Festival.

Twenty nine successful years later the alliance's main focus is still exposing
local artists and encouraging the youth to become involved in traditional music.

The Fogo Island Folk Alliance bought the first accordions for the well known Fogo
Island Accordion group. These five young girls took to the stage for the first time at the Brimstone Head Folk Festival.
Interest in accordion playing has grown tremendously on Fogo Island.

As well as local performers, the annual festival features folk artists from NL and outside the province.

The festival takes its name from a popular landmark - Brimstone Head
- considered by the Flat Earth Society to be one of the four corners of the world.

Over the years the Brimstone Head Folk Festival has grown in popularity and has
successfully highlighted the best of Newfoundland folk music and songs.
